Cafe South 12 is named after its location at No. 12, South Second Street on the right side of the temple. Originally, Cafe South 12 was a craft beer bar transformed from the first floor of an old Guangzhou villa and operated by a pair of cousins. Regular customers treat this place as their second balcony for solo drinking, or as a second living room to gather friends.

Beer was the original core of this space.

The impetus for the design originated from the younger sister's wish to sell coffee here, which corresponded to the addition of a coffee counter and minor outdoor renovations. Later, as the older sister also hoped for a refreshed look of the bar, the design task naturally escalated to integrating the indoor beer and coffee functions and upgrading the outdoor dining area holistically.

Coffee became the new core of Cafe South 12 during daytime.

The design started with the idea of having one operation area indoors and one outdoors. Outside, a set of inclined steps functionally bridges the elevation difference between indoors and outdoors, visually guiding people from the courtyard iron gate to the indoor door that is perpendicular to it. The extension of the steps forms seats and flower beds, embracing the courtyard. Inside, a stainless steel coffee counter facing the indoor door becomes the new focal point of the space, while the beer counter retains the memory of the original site with minor adjustments. The contrast between the new and the old is striking.

Once the starting point is set, the rest is a matter of guiding the space according to circumstances. The interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces and the creation of seating ambiance follow naturally. The style of the space pursues simplicity and elegance. After multiple attempts, excessive decorations were removed to return to minimalism, with only gray tones and wood elements constructing the space. Spatial elements become the backdrop for the spatial experience, making way for the trees, light and shadow, coffee, and beer in the venue.

南十二，因位于寺右南二街 12 号而得名。南十二原是一个社区精酿酒吧， 是一个老广州别墅的首层改造而成，由一对表姐妹经营。老顾客待这里犹如自己的第二个阳台，独自小酌；又如第二个客厅，呼朋唤友。

啤酒，是这里原本的空间内核。

设计的动因原是二家姐希望在这里卖咖啡， 对应一张咖啡吧台和室外的轻改造。后边因为大家姐也希望酒 吧焕然一新，自然设计任务就升级为，室内的酒咖功能整合以及室外就餐区的整体升级。

咖啡成为南十二日间的新内核。

室内室外各一个操作，是设计的原点。室外，一组倾斜的踏步，功能上消解室内外高差，视觉上将人从庭 院铁门引向垂直九十度的室内大门，踏步的牵拉和延伸形成座椅和花坛，环抱庭院。室内，一张正对室内大门的不锈钢咖啡吧台是空间新主角，而啤酒吧台选择保留原有场地记忆，微调为主。一新一旧形成对比。

原点一旦定下，剩下都是因势利导的空间梳理。室内外空间的互动，座位氛围的营造便是顺理成章的操作了。空间的风格追求简练淡雅，多番尝试后去掉多余修饰，回归极简，仅以灰调和木元素构筑空间。空间元素成为空间体验的幕布，让位于场地的树木，光影，咖啡和啤酒。
